TIM RICE (Lyrics) was born in 1944 in leafy Buckinghamshire, England. He was first represented on Broadway as the lyricist of Jesus Christ Superstar in 1971, failing to win a Tony, or to be frank, many good reviews. He put this down to jealousy until his second Broadway effort, Evita received an even worse mauling from most critics, which made him contemplate the ghastly possibility that he might not be any good at his job. However, he won two Tonysfor Evita (book and lyrics) and decided to carry on regardless. His first musical written with Andrew Lloyd Webber (as were those other two) was Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat and that finally made it to the Great White Way in 1982, doing fairly well there for a while. His fourth Broadway musical was Chess written with Abba's Bjorn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson, an unmitigated commercial disaster in 1988, the New York Times being particularly forceful in its disapproval. But this is actually a cracking good show and will return (just opened in Stockholm). More recently his name has been spotted on NYC marquees relating to King David, Disney's Beauty and the Beast (both with Alan Menken's music), The Lion King and Aida (both with Elton John). For Aida, he won his third Tony, with Sir Elton, for the score. At one point, in 2000, he had four shows on Broadway at once, but no one else noticed. He has also written the lyrics for the musicals Blondel (music by the late Stephen Oliver), Heathcliff (John Farrar) and Starmania (Michel Berger), but no producer has yet wanted to risk these in New York. He is very famous in England, primarily for being a cricket lover, but can stroll around the Big Apple unrecognized except by British tourists. He has three Oscars and a knighthood, three children and a home near Frenchman's Creek. Future plans include losing weight.

DANNY TROOB (Orchestrator) wrote the orchestrations for Aladdin, Pocahontas and Hercules, as well as the film version of Beauty and the Beast.
